NEUTER CLINIC SPAIN

Neuter Clinic was founded twenty years ago
In order for a pet to be rehomed, by law they have to be neutered, however the charities and organisations were unable to pay for this neutering and this brought about the founding of Neuter Clinic. Veterinary students (very limited places now) and new graduates, from across the globe, have received very little hands on surgical training and are unable to perform neuters. The monies they pay goes towards the cost of anaesthetics, consumables , suture material equipment maintenance, travel costs for the cat catchers etc and this then enables the charities, refugios and organisations , to get their animals neutered, allowing them to find a forever home.
Without the veterinary new graduates and students, the animals are unable to find a home and .........
At one organisation around 11 dogs a day are abandoned.
IN THE LAST YEAR AT THE CLINIC WE HAVE
NEUTERED OVER 2,500 CATS
AND OVER 1,000 DOGS
THANKS TO YOU ALL THESE DOGS CAN NOW FIND A FOREVER HOME
AND YOU HAVE PREVENTED OVER 2000 KITTENS FROM AN AGONISING DEATH

FROM THE YEAR 2025 ONWARDS
From 1st June 2025 Neuter Clinic will be receiving students again, both qualified and non qalified groups will be catered for, placements tend to go extremely quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Esther will be joining as a veterinary surgeon, with a large amount of University experience, teaching students surgery,
Having received thousands of students over the years, I have drastically developed the bitch spay technique, to make it safer and far easier than the 3 clamp technique. The new technique makes it nearly impossible to get ovarian pedicle bleeds, gives you fantastic ovarian exposure and you will soon be confident in surgeries. The main reason I continue the programme, is that I was there to, many years ago and there was nobody there to help me. So I want to be there for you.
The technique mainly incorporates
- Uterine separation
- Use of carmalt clamps and one clamp technique
-How to effectively break suspensory ligaments in seconds
- How to tie a goodMiller´s Knots
- How to position deep knots on the pedicle
How to check your ligatures, long before removing the ovary
- Incisional position and finding the uterus
CAN A VETERINARY STUDENT ATTEND NEUTER CLINIC ?
We will be again taking students who are not qualified and continue to support European students, we also have a different programme for qualified vets.
Nearly all the universities across the world, support the programme and acknowledge time spent here, as part of their external course work /EMS, except certain UK Universities
We once again be receiving students from the UK and we advise that you check with your Uni, to see if it can count as EMS. Sadly the programme can not be free, as the charity organizations have no money for anaesthetics and materials, equipment etc. So the money paid is to cover these costs
You perform the surgery from start to finish and we only step in if needed. We use gold standard anaesthetics as in private practice. You will find that one or two weeks with us, will be equivalent to several months in private practice. We provide a relaxed, non commercial, supportive environment, with no ticking clock. You will be amazed how this brings out your confidence
The surgical needs of the stray animals are mainly routine neutering, but we will also perform other surgeries, including tumour removals, suturing wounds, hernia repairs, leg amputation, diaphragmatic hernia repair, GDV, mammary neoplasms, entropion and cherry eye surgery.

ABOUT NEUTER CLINIC
Dr Wayne Hockenhull qualified from Glasgow in 1994 and after developing a successful career, he relocated to Spain in 2007 and became colegiado with Malaga Veterinary College.
Most animal charities in Spain have limited funds for surgical treatment, which is fundamental to re-homing strays.
There are many students or newly qualified vets, with very little practical surgical experience and this is where the idea of the Veterinary Intensive Surgical Training came from, as Wayne realised the opportunity to combine these two, for the benefit of both.
Veterinary Surgeons looking to develop their surgical skills and confidence
The programme is now switching from students, to newly qualified veterinary surgeons wanting to develop their skills and build their confidence with surgical procedures and also experienced vets returning to surgery after a break in practice.
Veterinary surgeons have attended from the UK, USA, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria and Portugal.
Despite their qualifications some of the highest academic achievers doubted their own surgical potential, due to the fear of operating on live animals. Each delegate soon overcame this within the non-commercial, supportive, surgical environment and even the most nervous found that they were capable of becoming competent surgeons.
In ten years of the programme several thousand animals have been neutered or received surgical procedures, which has then allowed them to be re-homed throughout Europe.
By providing the opportunity to perform surgery in a more relaxed and supportive environment with stray/abandoned animals, vets rapidly develop their surgical skills and after one to two weeks they gain the equivalent experience of several months in normal practice.
Intense vet surgical programmes, building confidence in a more relaxed non-commercial environment

If you are nervous or apprehensive about performing surgery, then this programme is the only place to get the surgical support and intensive practice you need, to build your confidence and develop a belief in yourself and your skills. We are here to help and if you have a specific goal, we will make sure you achieve that goal.
We are very proud that this programme has already helped thousands of abandoned animals start a new life and at the same time helped hundreds of veterinary students and surgeons develop their surgical skills and confidence.
